For custom, automated misting systems there are three different pressure levels that are used for varying purposes.
- Low pressure (50-90 PSI) run directly off of a water faucet coming from a building. These do not need a pump to increase the pressure. An example of this system is the misting system packages that can be bought from any large do it yourself hardware store. These are the lowest cost option but they will tend to get a person wet and not be near as effective at cooling the air as higher pressure systems.
- Mid pressure (160-240 PSI) must increase the water pressure by use of a pump. The water comes from a water faucet or is siphoned from a tank. The average size water molecule is 30 microns. The primary usage is in an insect control misting system. Other uses include: outdoor cooling in more arid environments, commercial a/c pre-cooling, humidification in a greenhouse and dust suppression. These can be combined with a fan or a blower to blow the cooled air at a target zone.
- High pressure (500-1200 PSI) also utilize a pump to increase the pressure and the water comes from a faucet or is siphoned from a tank. Uses include: cooling, fog/mist effects, and dust suppression. These are the most effective pumps in low and higher humidity environments because the droplet size is so small (average 15 micron) and the droplets “flash evaporate” quickly. These nozzles can be used on a mist curtain or they can be combined with a fan or a blower.
